Before the invention of the refrigerator, the ice is a precious commodity that can not be easily obtained or made, especially during the summer. To preserve meat and other foodstuffs of large blocks of ice to be imported all the way from the Nordic countries in the Arctic circle.

For example in Europe, ice imported from Norway. In Russia, they are obtained from the River Neva, and in India take of the Himalayas.



Iran, the climate is quite extreme hard water even in the winter though, has a unique and clever way to maintain their imported ice. They have a special building like a giant refrigerator that can keep the ice remained available throughout the year.

During the winter, ice and snow brought into the home ice, packed with straw and sawdust. Ice houses like this began to be built since the 17th century BC. Made of mud bricks formed so. Dome-shaped and in its interior forms a deep well.







Aside from being a cool place, the people of Iran when it could make its own ice. Behind the house there is a channel for pouring ice water into it during the winter. Because sheltered, the water freezes. This is done repeatedly until the summer comes and there is sufficient supply of ice.

There are more than 100 home ice throughout Iran, but now many are damaged. Even some only used as a landfill.
